Current Originals ‘on wood’

A scenic gallery of current originals that have been burned onto raw wood.

Capturing these shots is my favourite part of what I do. It’s worth the extra effort; there’s nothing more satisfying than finding the perfect backdrop for the piece, especially in the very places that inspire me. A lot of these shots required precise planning, as many of the foliage doesn’t last for more than a week or two during the year, or even days when it comes to the mushrooms. All have been burned onto wood surfaces, usually cherry, birch, or maple, slabs or cookies, and with a live edge bark border whenever possible. Some pieces have been burned on ‘Burls’- a tree growth in which the wood grain has grown in a deformed manner; usually caused by disease, burls are coveted among woodworkers. The majority of the wood I use has been repurposed from naturally fallen trees from here within the Kootenay’s.

These Incredibly detailed and realistic pieces are always done completely by hand- ‘One hair at a time’. A painstakingly slow and tedious process achieved by using a sharp thin blade to form the hairs, and by having no social life. The depth and intricate details of these pieces and the way they appear in different lightings throughout the day is quite hard to capture on photos- one of the many reasons I like taking these pieces out into the wild to shoot in different settings. Also good quality control- if they can survive the bush, they can survive the post.

This gallery collection consists of my latest pieces, all available for purchase in my Shop.
