Mushroom Season
A sneak peak at my latest piece- Currently in the works.
This will be my second largest piece to date, on a gorgeous slab of white maple that creates bright contrasts against the dark burn marks.
This piece will give ‘Beary Season’ a run for being the most detailed, and with the most plants and animals incorporated into the piece. It’s still a work in progress with lots of room to fill yet, and already there’s 15 different animals.
The main focus of this piece is the American Badger; an elusive and mysterious carnivore known for being an incredibly powerful digger. I chose the badger for two different reasons: one of those stemming from my time spent in the old abandoned mine shafts that tunnel through the mountains around my town.
The other reason I chose a badger ties into the next main subject of the piece: Mushrooms.
I’ve become enthralled with mushrooms over the last couple of years, passionately foraging and photographing the different fungi species found across the Kootenays. It’s become a bit of an obsession, and I often find myself prioritizing the hunt over anything else. So far I have added 12 mushroom species to the piece- all ones I have personally photographed and or eaten whenever possible.
So what exactly does a badger have to do with mushrooms?
And why is the third most important subject.. a snake?
There’s honestly only a narrow demographic of people that will understand completely why I did this, and it goes back to the early days of the internet, back to a simpler time….
